Precision Installation
Each 110,000 litre tank is Fibreglass wrapped Steel with an internal liner where it meets with the Aviation Fuel. An interstitial vacuum exists between the Fibreglass and Steel layers. The tanks weigh some 13 tonne. They are 3.47 metres in diameter, 12.770 long and over 4 metres high. Each tank is unloaded from the wide load transport and placed directly into the hole upon the gravel base. This must be done without an intermediate unload off the truck to ground level to ensure no contamination to the tank, or the tank hole. Due to NSW and ACT road transport restriction, the tanks are loaded on an angle to reduce their transport height, hence these tanks need to be rotated within the hole. Each tank was held in place by 7 straps attached to concrete anchors.
Global installed 5 tanks in a 14 metre hole. 4 tanks were unloaded, installed and strapped in one day ! The picture shows the final tank being loaded into the hole. This huge tank was rotated to its vertical position and install within a gap of 4.5 metres!

It is not every day that the largest underground fuel tanks in the fuel business share space with aircraft.
With the co-operation of Canberra International Airport, Global escorted 5 X 110s via live taxi ways in the last 2 days into the new Canberra
Fuel farm.
If you look hard behind the QANTAS 737 in the Pic 011 you can see the red tanks on the back of the 'drop-deck low-loader trucks'.

Preparation for Crane and Tanks
The top of the tank hole has been graded for 100 Tonne crane and tank trucks. A gravel
stockpile has been prepared for the kibble bucket of the cranes so that the cranes can pour
gravel between the tanks.

Anchors are done !
Ivan and Paul laser level the tank gravel base to ensure a correct height. The tanks will
be sitting on a 400mm base. The base has been adjust to a 2% (1:50) fall towards the loading
bay across the profile of the tanks. The profile of the tank hole has been set such that the
loading bay and discharge face have been set level. Monitoring well tubes have been placed at
the 2 lowest points within the tank hole, i.e. outside the anchors for T01 and T05 on the
loading bay side. The monitoring well can be seen behind Ivan and Paul.

Anchors away.....
12 anchors and approved pea gravel were installed within the New Tank Farm at Canberra Airport.
The anchors have been positioned and the gravel level set by Global's surveyor to ensure
an accurate tank installation. The work on the tank hole is currently one day ahead of
schedule ! The walls of the tank farm have been amended from benches to gradual batters to
improve the safety of personnel working in and around the hole. Other activies included
Global's site mobilization, establishing temporary generation power and preparation of
monitoring wells.

Survey & repairs to Aviation bulk fuel storage farm.
2 x 1,500,000L and 2 x 160,000L Jet A1 tanks

Note the vehicles in the background. Very reassuring (??) when you’re welding around several million litres of jet fuel! It’s called “Hot Work Permit” Welding!

Global International
Global consults internationally on the construction and maintenance of Aviation Fuel Systems. During 2003/04 we assisted in the construction of a hydrant system at Clark Field in the Philippines. Night welding in the humid air of this country produces some interesting images.
